Maple bats have become a lot more popular since Barry Bonds hit his
record 73 home runs using a maple bat, but that's not the only reason.
Maple is a much higher density wood than ash, which makes it heavier,
and a growing number of players prefer maple bats because the
wood is harder, the barrel doesn't flake or separate, and it is beautiful
peace of wood.

For decades, ash wood has been the wood of choice for baseball bats.
Although other woods may seem stronger and are heavier, ash has the
best bat strength-to-weight ratio of any of the woods, which is significant
because most players do not want to use a bat greater than 32oz. However,
over time after repeated use Ash grain may eventually flake or separate.

Although Birch wood bats are not as hard as maple, they are more flexible
and for the price they are the best alternative. Birch wood is more durable
and can last a lot longer than ash. I personally never used it but I never
hear anything bad about it.
